2024 USTA MIDWEST Coach of the Year

2024 Recipient: Dell Pride (Central Indiana District)

Dell Pride, known to many as “Coach” Pride, has nurtured tennis on the west side of Indianapolis, which has been historically underserved. At Cardinal Ritter High School, he’s led 30 players on both the boys and girls tennis teams. The teams practice using public courts at local parks as their school doesn’t have tennis courts. Pride utilizes the turf football field, hurdles in the parking lot and even the school hallways for practice. He has started a summer and after-school program for area youth and provides coaching to multiple Community Tennis Associations in the area. He has a “never say can’t” attitude and brings tremendous positive energy wherever he goes.

Resume

Current - Head Coach / Boy’s and Girl’s Tennis Cardinal Ritter High School Indianapolis, IN

In the role of a full-time school teacher for Cardinal Ritter High School and Middle School, I work in a classroom during school hours in the special assignment of partnering with students to achieve success in all their class loads. I work with students who have tested and been assigned Individual Educational Programs (IEP’s) in order to learn at a rate and in a way that works best for each individual. I assist in multiple studies as needed for 7th -12th grade, while monitoring the grades of each student in our program for encouragement and direction.

I also coach the boys and girls high school tennis teams. I established the first winter training for the tennis teams and brought the middle school students interested in tennis to work with the high school teams for exposure for the lower schools in a mentoring program. I was able to creatively use our school gym for the first time to train and teach tennis for the high school boys’ and girls’ teams and interested middle school students.

I have recently passed the first part of classroom studies and for my CDL in order to drive a larger air brake bus to accommodate the explosive growth of tennis that has happened since I became a coach for the tennis teams and a full-time teacher at the school. We had over 40 girls sign up for tennis this season and currently are working with 26 girls for the high school tennis team alone. Also, in charge of racquet stringing and customization for members of the teams.

Current - Director of Tennis and Pickleball / The Riviera Club Indianapolis, IN

As the first Director of Tennis to bring winter tennis to the gym for the youth of the 90-year-old historic Swim and Tennis Club, I have breathed new life into a struggling tennis program that has been longing for the greatness in tennis that once marked this proud club. Utilizing my established staff, I was able to provide tennis and pickleball programing for the club members through the winter and excite the club for our upcoming Spring and Summer tennis programing. I will be restabling club tournaments and socials to the club for the first time since 2014. Also, in charge of racquet stringing and customization for club members

Current - Director of Tennis Broadmoor Country Club Indianapolis, IN

Seasonal position at a top 50 National Historical Golf Club in the affluent Kessler Avenue area of Indianapolis Indiana less than 10 minutes from the Internationally acclaimed Indianapolis 500 Brickyard. As the first tennis professional for the club in over 12 years, I was brought in to rebuild the tennis program for juniors and adults. I am responsible for the program development and the maintenance of the tennis and pickleball courts and tennis clubhouse. In less than 2 years we have been able to grow junior tennis and begin annual adult tennis events. Also, in charge of racquet stringing and customization for club members.

Lead Tennis Instructor / Indianapolis Healthplex

Lead Tennis Instructor for youth clinics and tournaments for inner club and USTA Events. Lead instructor for all pickleball programs and tournament coordinator. Support the directives of the Director for Tennis for the Indianapolis Healthplex and provide creative ways to grow programing. Also involved in racquet stringing and tennis facility maintenance.

Varsity Tennis Coach / Warren Central High School Indianapolis, IN

Provide tennis coaching and instruction for the students of Warren Central High School. Maintaining the highest levels of accountability for safety and learning for students in scholastics and tennis. I am most proud of the people I was able to bring into a position to help me give this community the most attention in tennis seen in many years. I had the largest volunteer coaching staff for Warren Central High School Tennis possibly ever seen. I was able to recruit a former Championship Indiana High School Coach and Indiana Hall of Fame High School Player along with a former #1 High School Singles Player from Ben Davis to be my Assistant Coaches. I had the support of the President of a City Tennis Organization as my Tournament Director and volunteer coach. The kids of Warren Central High School got the attention during season and during summer to grow an exploding girls’ program by the second year and two boys’ seasons that witnessed doubles teams going further in STATE Championships than had been seen in many years. I am very proud of my work at Warren Central High School and the program was left in the hands of my two top assistant coaches after 3 seasons of training under me.

Head Tennis Coach / Fisk University Nashville, TN

Leading the NAIA Fisk Bulldogs, then members of the (GCAC), while delivering on the mission to develop the whole student though the application of professionally centered truth on a campus of serious academics and shared values of excellence. Having 2 years of failure in consistent competition on the Men’s and Women’s side after a loss of the program and over a decade of lack of participation, the Men’s team cleared 5 players for NAIA competition and brought home 2 trophies on their way to competing in the conference championships in New Orleans. The training of 5 Fisk Women’s players and guidance through the NAIA clearing process is an exciting start for the 2014 Fall Season, after beginning 2013 Fall with only 1 cleared academically available player. Including the recruitment of new freshmen, the Fisk Tennis team is in position to have a historical season for the University.

Head Tennis Pro / Hadley Park Jr. Tennis Development Program

Only the second elected Head professional in the over 30 year history of this 501-C3 Not for profit Jr. tennis program. I was hired after the original head pro & founding president retired and a 5 year gap existed due to the city cutting the supporting funds for the program. My job to create a value for a program that was offered for free to the community for over 30 years with no self-sustaining plan in place was met with energy and passion. I created a supporting staff of Instructors, trained Jr. Instructors and began with providing excellent instruction to the few remaining students. I was part of a team that created a self-sustaining plan based on value services, including the first ever hosted sanctioned USTA Jr. Tournaments at Hadley Park Tennis Center. We have since tripled our numbers and developed sanctioned tournament champions, including 3 players for the current Tennessee State University Tennis Team. The focus for the turnaround growth of this program was:

  • Be passionate
  • Be better
  • Have a plan
  • Execute your plan
  • Evaluate your progress
  • Stay passionate!!
Summer Tennis Camp Dir. / University School of Nashville

As the Tennis Coach for University School of Nashville for Middle School and High School, I began the Summer Tennis Camp Program to grow the Tennis Teams from the lower division Schools and recruit city wide for USN. The girls high school and middle school tennis teams only had enough players to make a team my first year as coach. The Summer Camp Programs had not offered Tennis in years and we started with only a couple of weeks to offer and only a few students involved. The camp has grown to over 220 kids this summer, with full weeks for 6 weeks straight. The USN Summer Tennis Camp is the largest Tennis Camp in the City of Nashville for the last 2 years straight. The boy’s Tennis Team won a State Championship and the girl’s tennis team is over 15 players deep now. The middle school girls’ team has had a couple of champions in the season playoffs and all this success has happened after the boost of new players added to the teams through Summer Tennis at USN.

Head Tennis Coach / University School of Nashville

5 years of growing USN Tennis as a Head Coach and Assistant Coach and Lower Schools PE Trainer. My job was to create a tennis society at USN and bring the program to championship status by growing the tennis culture from the lower schools up. I designed a plan of growth that included adding tennis to the PE Curriculum for lower schools starting in the 2nd Grade and making the training for the Middle School Teams more like high end private instruction. I also added a Summer Tennis Program that would keep kids playing almost year round and market the tennis program to other athletes from other sports and other schools. The Result was a State Runner Up Title my first year as Coach for the Boy’s High School Team and a State High School Boy’s Championship my 3rd year as Coach. We had multiple Girls’ and Boy’s Middle Schools winning seasons and a Girl’s Individual Champion for Season Ending Championships.
